Wellington (Adelaide Street)

Sir Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, has the distinction of having had more pubs named after him than anyone – with the notable exception of Nelson. The Three Towns, Plymouth, Stonehouse and Devonport, at one time had at least five Wellingtons, three of which were relatively close to each other – in Union Street, King Street and Adelaide Street (Stonehouse). The Union Street premises, however, was named after John Wellington, its licensee for the best part of thirty years, in the late nineteenth century, during which time it was known as Wellington’s Hotel.

Coinidentally however the publican’s licence from the Wellington in Adelaide Street was transferred to the Union Street premises in 1939, several months before the start of the Second World War.
