Valentis Café Bar

Although not strictly a pub, Valentis Café Bar, operated by C & G Catering, has an independent licensed bar in one of the finest locations in Plymouth, at the eastern end of the Hoe Promenade.

The building itself is a splendid late-Victorian affair and was commissioned by the local authority as a residence for the man in charge of the Hoe when it was first laid out as a formal park in the 1880s.

Jinkin, the builder, tendered for the lodge building, together with the adjoining lavatories, in 1887, around the same time as the new road was being created around the front of the Hoe. When completed an advertisement was placed looking for a married man, over the age of forty, to take on the role of Hoe caretaker, while his wife was to have charge of the lavatories – their joint wage was one pound a week, with their residence in this rather attractive lodge.
