Prince of Wales (Stonehouse)

One of the most common pubs names across the Three Towns, Plymouth, Stonehouse and Devonport have each had at least one Prince of Wales and if that wasn’t confusing enough, the Stonehouse pub of that name was to be found – albeit briefly – at 5 Fore Street.

Fore Street, Stonehouse was later renamed High Street, which is just as well as 5 Fore Street, Devonport was also the site of a pub – the Devonport Railway Hotel, formerly the Ordnance Inn. Bombed during the war, it was one of the few non-residential properties to be rebuilt in Devonport after hostilities, reopening as the Ark Royal in the late 1950s.

No.5 Fore Street, Stonehouse, meanwhile, didn’t remain a pub for long. Named after Queen Victoria’s eldest son, Prince Albert Edward (born in 1841 and destined to become King Edward VII), the pub appears to have closed in the mid-1860s. One of a run of hostelries just off Stonehouse Bridge, numbers 1, 2 and 3 Fore Street were also licensed for many years.
