Jack Rabbit

First time visitors to the City could be forgiven for thinking that Plymouth’s newest purpose built pub is actually one of the area’s oldest, but despite the classic architectural features, the sloping ceilings and the log fireplaces, this “Traditional Inn” is traditional in style only. That said this roadside inn on the edge of Derriford Roundabout has much to commend it over the cavernous characterless watering holes that are often created in the name of a pub these days.

The name itself comes, directly or indirectly from a prairie hare of North America – it’s an abbreviated form of Jackass Rabbit, a reference to this large furry creature having very long ears and legs. Elton John and Bernie Taupin commemorated the creature in song over thirty years ago although that is by no means the only other well-known piece or product to share the epithet.
