Harbour Avenue Inn

The Harbour Avenue Inn stood on the south-western junction of Harbour Avenue and Lower Street behind North Quay. Harbour Avenue runs almost due north from Sutton Harbour while Lower Street runs almost east west between it and Hawker’s Avenue.

Although greatly altered today, both streets are still with us, although the modern Lower Street is a far cry from its Victorian counterpart – part of the remaining street surface is still cobbled though. The pub site itself lies buried beneath the towering new development in Harbour Avenue and although our illustration does not quite do justice to area it depicts (it is a tiny part of the original bird’s eye view) it was at least executed in 1873 when the pub was still in business.
