Gallery Bar

The Gallery Bar of the Copthorne Hotel was opened on 17 March 1987, 40 years to the day that the first stake was driven for the layout of Plymouth’s post-war city centre (there is a plaque to commemorate the 1987 date outside the hotel, while on a kerbstone of the roundabout on Derry’s Cross the date is erroneously recorded as 21-3-47).

It had always been the intention of the architects of the Plan for Plymouth to have an hotel at the top of what became Armada Way, although, in the event, the building appeared to one side, rather than punctuating the top of that grand central axis.

A public bar that is bookable for private parties, the Gallery is due for a major refurb next year, marking its 25th year of operating.
