Bongogos

The latest licensed premises in town opened earlier this year in the new Casino/Entertainment complex on the site of the former Drake Cinema. This bit of the post-war jigsaw was only completed in 1959 and yet it barely survived four decades, and its demolition brought to an end a continuous cinematic presence in Union Street that stretched over a century. Historically famous for the number of cinemas and pubs that have at one time or another graced its presence this new licensed premises – a stylish combination of pub/club and restaurant – is one of three that have appeared in the street on this side of Western Approach in the last three years, the other two being Kularoos and the Union Rooms – and between them they undoubtedly have more drinking space than all the earlier Union Street pubs put together.
