Prospect Street

Prospect Street, for those who don’t know it, runs north-south half-way between North Hill and Greenbank Road. Anyone familiar with the two larger thoroughfares will be aware that both offer tantalising views of the sea and the Sound and so too, to a lesser extent does Prospect Street. The name like many similarly named places comes from the fundamental definition of the word “prospect” and that is “a look out or view”.

Hence we also have Prospect Place running north-south along the top of West Hoe and again commanding fine views, this time seaward views are now somewhat obscured by the big hotels facing Cliff Road, but there are other views on offer there too, particularly across to Cornwall. Even closer to Cornwall, physically, is Prospect Row in Devonport, here though the prospects, or views, aren’t quite as obvious.
