Marina Road

In the summer of 1934 Prince George, the youngest son of King George, announced his engagement to Princess Marina, the youngest daughter of Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark and Grand Duchess Helen Vladimirovna of Russia.

Marina and Prince George, recently made Duke of Kent, married soon afterwards and it was at the wedding that eight-year-old Princess Elizabeth met Marina’s cousin, Prince Philip, for the first time, although they didn’t particularly remember the encounter.

Sadly, it was on the 25 August 1942, three days short of the eighth anniversary of their engagement announcement, that the Duke of Kent was killed when the Sunderland flying boat in which he was travelling hit a mist-bound hill in Scotland. He and the Duchess of Kent had three children, Edward, Alexandra and Michael, who had been christened earlier that month.

Marina Road, at Ernesettle, was laid out around the time of the King’s Jubilee in 1935.
