Camel's Head
Built in 1825, seemingly thanks to the Reverend C.T. Trelawny-Ross for the benefit of the men laying down the new road from Plymouth, it was pulled down in 1988 when that same road was widened.
Known for all but ten years as the Camel’s Head it was renamed the Submarine in 1978, in recognition of all the submarine work and activity that occurs on the built-up mouth of Camel’s Head Creek.
Ernest Holderness, the longest serving post-war licensee was landlord at that time and the name change was prompted by a change of ownership as the pub was bought that year by Bass from Courage. It stood opposite Ferndale Road and next to an old cinema.
