Barley Sheaf
If you imagine driving down the middle of Raleigh Street, from the bottom of Royal Parade and going right through the shops directly in front of you, on the northern side of New George Street, there at the back entrance, you would find the site of the Barley Sheaf, on the corner of what was once King Street and Cambridge Street.
John Laskey was the licensee here in 1847, when it was the Barley Mow and the address was given as Frankfort Street. In 1881, it was now, without moving, in King Street. It appears to have become known as the Old Barley Sheaf in the 1890s and on its closure in late 1957 the licence was transferred to the pub newly-built at the junction of New George Street and Market Avenue - originally known as the Barley Sheaf, then as Trader Jacks, it is the Corner House today.
