Shallowford Road
It takes its name from the old farm that once stood on the edge of Efford Marsh, one of a number of farms in the area that was demolished some years before this and neighbouring estates were redeveloped in the late 1950s early 1960s.
The original farm name itself presumably deriving from a shallow ford over the marsh or stream which ran down into Forder Valley - another name incorporating a ford element. Plymouth has many such names indicating the former presence of streams and inlets where, in some instances land-fills have removed the main traces of a water course.
Hundreds of acres have been added to modern Plymouth in this way in the last fifty years, although the process has undoubtedly been going on much longer than that.
