Miller Court
In a report of the City Engineer to the Highways Sub-Committee dated 4th December 1986, there was a suggestion that the new development off Millbay Road, Stonehouse, should be named Miller Court.
“The name Millbay Court was suggested but when consulted two of the ward councillors preferred the name Miller Court for the following reasons:-
(a) The development is being carried out on the site of the old Flour Mills.
(b) The late Alderman Miller was born in Stonehouse and was the representative for this area.
Grandson of a freed slave, WA “Darkie” Miller was elected to the council in 1925 and was bombed out of No.10 East Street, Stonehouse, where he was born, during the war. In 1945, when the Labour Party won its first ever majority on the Council, William Alexander Miller became chairman of housing and devoted his great energies to the job - he even turned down the Lord Mayoralty in 1947 so that he could give his full attention to the job of providing post-war homes for Plymouth people.
