Military Road

Running up from Plymouth Road beyond the Embankment, coming into Crabtree, is a steep thoroughfare known as Military Road. Linking a number of the forts on the north eastern section of the ring made by Palmerston's Victorian fortifications, the road passes Laira Fort and Efford Fort and heads off towards Austin Fort.

For much of its length this is little more than a country lane and seems almost out of place in the middle of Plymouth. As it reaches "Little America" the road becomes a footpath and what lies beyond the Deer Park estate has long since been built up and developed as a more major road.

Interestingly enough there is another Military Road associated with these forts, on the far western section of the ring, it runs between Tregantle Fort and Polhawn on the Rame Peninsula.
