Little America
There were three basic types of pre-fab erected in Plymouth after the war Arcon, which had a corrugated finish, Aluminium, metal walls and windows, but wooden doors and the American style, of compressed cardboard appearance and painted cream.
These pre-fabs were put up all over the city with those at Efford on the north facing slope behind the cemetery among the first. These Efford pre-fabs “Amercian bungalows” came directly from the States and were what gave rise to the area becoming known as Little America.
While the pre-fabs have long since gone the street names conferred upon the area then remain today, hence Nevada Close, Oregon Way, Michigan Way and California Gardens.
