George Place/Street

George Place, Stonehouse, and the erstwhile George Street, Stonehouse, both took their name from the parish church of St. George, which was built by public subscription in 1789 on the site of a much earlier Stonehouse chapel.

At that time the Royal Marine barracks had not long been opened and the Royal Naval Hospital, Stonehouse Bridge and the Longroom were all comparatively new developments in the rapidly expanding town of Stonehouse. Built to the same plan as the Dockyard Chapel, the church was damaged beyond repair during the Blitz; the tower was cut clean in two with one half standing, and so it was pulled down. It stood just to the north of the western end of Emma Place, on the far side of Durnford Street. Part of the stonework from the church was used in the construction of the Lady Chapel of St. Gabriels, Peverell, which was built in the mid-1950s.
