Fore Street
"In some towns the name for an important street may be Main Street, as in Bingley and Rotherham, although the latter equally has its High Street (one of the most familiar of all street names). Elsewhere the main street may be known as Fore Streer. This name is particularly common in the West Country, where it is found in Axminster, Bridgwater, Chard, Exeter, Exmouth, Ilfracombe, Newquay and St ives" (Adrian Room - The Street Names of England)
To tht list we can add, Devonport, Plympton St Maurice, Tamerton Foliot, Torpoint and Saltash - Plymouth meanwhile had and Stonehouse still has a High Street. In all the aforementioned local instances it can be seen that the Fore Street is, historically, the principal street of each area, although of course in Devonport the bliz reduced the once proud thoroughfare to but a hadow of its former self.
