Ferry Road
It would appear that there was some kind of ferry in operation from Torpoint to Devonport as early as 1730 as a document dated November 1760 contains the following: "about 30 years Since a passage or fferry being established at a place Call'd Tarrpoint..."
It wasn't until 1790, 100 years after work had begun on Devonport Dockyard, that an act was passed enabling Pole Carew and the Earl of Mount Edgecumbe to go ahead with their proposals to establish a formal service, which, in the event, was started on Monday July 4 1791.
Initially there were two services, one for foot passengers and one for horses, carriages and cattle. The former crossed to North Corner, at the bottom of Cornwall Street, Devonport, the other to the bottom of what has long since been known as Ferry Road.
