Embankment Road

Following the family move from Boringdon Hall to Saltram, the Parkers, in the shape of the newly created Lord Boringdon, built an embanked carriage drive from Longbridge at Marsh Mills to his fine new residence. This had the dramatic effect of keeping the tidal waters out of the Plympton marshes.

Boringdon then turned his attentions to the other side of the Plym and helped to promote the activities of the Plym Embankment Company who, between 1802 and 1809, built a road along the western side of the river, cutting off the Laira marshes in the process.

The following year, 1810, on the pretext of celebrating the Jubilee of George III (1760-1820), Plymouth has a new road built to meet up with wht henceforth becme known as Embankment Road. This road was a huge boon to the town as it meant that ravellers no onger had to negotiate the very steep hill at Lipson.
