Derby Road
When work began on the Whitleigh Estate in the late-forties the idea was that the new streets would be named after county towns and the concept was largely adhered to for the best part of thirty years.
In all, there are some thirty street names on the estate that name check towns in different counties around England, and in Plymouth generally there are at least another ten counties honoured in this way, indeed Hertfordshire seems to be the odd one out.
Derby itself is a thriving industrial city and it is the county town of Derbyshire. It was recorded as Deoraby as far back as 917AD. The name, thought to be Scandinavian in origin, and which was written down as Derbei in the Domesday Survey, is said to mean farmstead or village - 'by' - where deer are kept.
