Curtis Street

Lieutenant Philip Curtis was a former pupil of Tamar Secondary School who was awarded the Victorian Cross for bravery in the Korean War (1950-53). Britain sent out troops as part of the United Nations force and Lieutenant Curtis's valiant action was part of an attack on an enemy position at the battle of the Imjin River.

Curtis, who was only twenty-four, died in the action. A few years later, when part of the area near his grandmother's home in Mount Street, Devonport, was being redeveloped the decision was taken to name one of the streets in his honour.

A plaque commemorating Lieutenant Curtis, which for so long stood in the entrance hall to Tamar School has now been relocated inside the Plymouth Guildhall.
