Colin Campbell Court
Colin Campbell came to Plymouth from Burnley in 1935. He had just been appointed Town Clerk in succession to the retiring RJ Fittall who had himself been in the post since 1917. Plymouth was looking to extend its boundaries at the time and Colin Campbell's experience in this field was partly what secured him the post.
During the Second World War, Colin Campbell took over as Air Raid Precautions Officer and found that little had been set in place and was therefore faced with the task of setting up Plymouth's ARP organization more or less from scratch. Within days of the end of the Blitz, Colin Campbell and the then Lord Mayor, Lord Astor, began talking about planning for a post-war Plymouth and it wasn't long before Lord Astor had brought in Professor Patrick Abercrombie to give his advice and to look through the many plans produced by the city engineer James Paton Watson.
Knighted in 1952, when the rebuilding of the City Centre was well under way, Colin Campbell eventually retired in 1953, and some years later the area between Western Approach and Raleigh Street was designated Colin Campbell Court.
