Church Hill
Some place names are clearly easier to account for than others. Church Hill, for examples, is pretty much self-explanatory.
It is the road that runss up the hill from, in this case, Eggbuckland Church - St Edward's (which is, incidentally, also commemorated in the naming of St Edward Gardens).
The church, although not as old as the hill it sits on, is one of the more ancient tructures around; parts of it are early 15th century. After all, Eggbuckland village was an important location in the days leading up to the Middle Ages, when Plym Bridge offered the lowest dry crossing of the Plym. It was, quite simply, the natural halfway station between Plympton Priory and Sutton Harbour.
So, at that time the route we know now as Church Hill would have been a fairly busy one. Most of the properties along its length, however, are, by comparison, relatively recent.
