Charlotte Street

Work probably began on the early buildings in Charlotte Street, Morice Town, when Queen Charlotte and Princess Charlotte were still alive.

Charlotte Sophia (1744-1818), princess of Mecklenberg-Strelitz, married George III shortly after his accession to the throne in 1761, and had 15 children by him. The eldest of these was George, the future George IV, who in turn had only one child, Princess Charlotte Augusta, born at Carlton House, London on the 7 January 1796. Her parents separated just months after her birth and she was brought up in strict seclusion.

In 1814 Charlotte broke off her engagement to Prince William of Orange and in 1816 she married Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg. Sadly she died in childbirth the following year and of the two it is probably in her honour that the street was named.
