Castle Rise

As the boundaries of Plymouth have been pushed out over the years so that area known as Plympton St. Maurice has come to fall within the city limits.

Of much greater antiquity than Plymouth generally, and even most of the Barbican, this is one of the most historically interesting and visually charming areas we have in the city. And nowhere can it better be seen than from the remains of the Norman castle, which in turn stands on the top of a mound which is itself thought to pre-date the conquest.

Although the castle can be approached from a number of different directions perhaps the most commonly used in Castle Rise itself, a short stretch which runs north from Fore Street, alongside the Guildhall, up to School Lane.
