Boringdon

Boringdon takes its name from the ancient British or Celtic camp or fort that was created in Saxon times and is to be found a little to the north of Elfordleigh.

The name is thought to be a compound of burh or burg, Old English words meaning fort or fortified place, and dun meaning down, hill or mountain and so we have a fortified place on the hill - which is exactly what it is.

The “ing” in this instance is said to be little more than a connecting element. Burraton, Burrington, Burradon and Buraton all have similar derivations. The earliest references we have of Boringdon itself both appear in 1279 where it appears both as Borington and Borindon.
