Barrack Place
So many major institutions have lent their names to surrounding streets in Plymouth, as elsewhere, that it is no surprise to find that there is a Barrack Place in Stonehouse, running east-west across the northern end of the Royal Marine Barracks in Durnford Street. However obvious it may appear to us nowthough we should not assume that the obvious will remin so forever and a day. Consider the Hosptial Road where now there is no hopital and the Station Roads where now there are no station. Indeed there was once a Barrack Street in Devonport, where there were also once several barracks... and now there are none.
The Stonehouse Barracks themselves though have been in continous occupation since they were first opened in December 1873 and the Marines of the Plymouth Division moved into their first purpose built housing in the area.
