Admirals Hard
For hundreds of years a ferry service operated between Barn Pool and Devil's Point and until it was eclipsed by the Torpoint Ferry in the middle of the eighteenth century this was the principal southernmost route linking Devon and Cornwall.
The establishment of the Victualling yard in the 1820s meant that the East Stonehouse landing place for the Cremyll ferry had to be moved from Devil's Point and in 1824 the Navy bought the old site and made available a new site further along the Stonehouse peninsula.
There the Admiralty constructed the very long and angular sloping stone landing jetty which had been known from that day to this as Admirals Hard.
