Following the original release, over a decade ago, of the video 'Plymouth The War Years' it was always my intention to write a book about the same subject. When it came to it I realised that it would be difficult to give a better flavour of those troubled times than that which Pat Twyford had achieved with his tome, It Came To Our Door, which was first published within just a few months of the end of the war. What it was possible to do, however, was add a few hundred photographs to the original, thereby bringing an extra dimension to the subject.

'Plymouth The War Years' did much the same thing only it had the added advantage of including moving images. Strangely enough the BBC had earlier considered making a film of the Plymouth story themselves, but had reached the conclusion that there wasn't enough film footage to fill an hour long documentary. It would appear that their researchers weren't aware that material labelled 'Devonport', 'Stonehouse' and 'Mount Batten', was part of the same story, indeed, in terms of the Services and their involvement, the main part. Thus it was that we unearthed well over an hour of moving images relating to the area between 1939 and 1945, and when we come to look back on it today, feel justified in making the claim that not only was it the best account of that period, locally, when it first came out, but, a decade or so on, it still hasn't been bettered. Thus it is that, at long last, we have decided to make the film available on the 'new', DVD format. Featuring footage of the visits of Churchill, the King and Queen, HMS Exeter, and of course of the Blitz itself, it is newly available for £9.99 at a number of outlets in town and, for those who missed the DVD issue of 'Plymouth Before the War' and 'Plymouth in the 1920s & 1930s', it is also available with them in a brand new box-set for three-for-two price of £19.99.

'Plymouth Before The War' for those unfamiliar with title, is a street-by-street tour of the Three Towns - as thoroughly as images allowed - with thrilling clips of the Hoe and Barbican, Derry's Clock, the old, old Drake Circus, Bedford Street, Wolseley Road, and Ker Street.

'Plymouth Life in the 1920s & 1930s' meanwhile is an entertaining celebration of the way we lived in those heady days; with the Hoe Pier & Bandstand, trams and buses, early airplanes and luxury liners, charabancs and motor cars with running boards … and bicycles built for two. A pre-TV world where people mainly made their own entertainment and were happy to venture out of house and home for fetes, fairs and other outdoor amusements.
